Abstract
While many of the nation's nearly 1.6 million tax-exempt organizations provide an educational or humanitarian benefit to society,a growing number may fall short of providing a truly charitable benefit for society. This paper outlines the growth in the size and scope of the nonprofit industry, highlighting concerns with increase in profit-generating and questionable activities by some of these groups.
