Description
The City Colored Orchestra made its debut at Douglass High School on May 21st, 1931, under the baton of conductor Charles L. Harris. W. Llewellyn Wilson (standing, center), supervisor of music in the "colored" schools and the orchestra's principal cellist, succeeded Harris as conductor of the orchestra in 1932. In 1934 the orchestra performed for Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt with pianist Ellis Lane Larkins as the soloist. The following year, soprano Anne Wiggins Brown, who would go on to create the role of Bess in Gershwin's opera, "Porgy and Bess," made her orchestral debut with the orchestra.
