Description
Gray and Son were prolific publishers of American atlases. Their works include many inset maps of American cities. This plate is from Gray's Atlas of the United States and shows the northern boundary of Baltimore City culminating at North Avenue. Outside the city limits is Druid Hill Park, purchased by Baltimore in 1860 and originally part of the Auchentorlie estate. The "Grounds of Johns Hopkins University," at upper right, suggests a future home for the university on the estate of Johns Hopkins, now know as Clifton Park.
