Abstract
Recent developments to improve the Direct Strength Method (DSM) for cold-formed steel flexural members led to a new form of strength equation. The inherent simplicity, flexibility, and curve-fitting control of this new form provided the oppor- tunity to implement cleaner and more accurate strength curves for other failure modes. This paper presents proposed new DSM equations for local and distortional buckling of flexural members, compression members, members with holes, and beam-columns. The same DSM equation form is also applied to shear buckling strength. These strength predictions are validated against existing test data. Improvements to predictions were achieved in all cases and the proposed equations are easier to use.
