Description from "Maryland from the Willard Hackerman Map Collection", George Peabody Library Exhibit Oct. 9, 2018 - March 16, 2019: "John F. Weishampel Jr. published the popular tourist guides titled "The Stranger in Baltimore". His 1872 map of Baltimore City is one of the first to identify the proposed expansion of the city boundaries. Earlier annexation attempts had failed and the boundaries depicted on this map were not changed until 1888. Weishampel's border vignettes are reminiscent of those on the 1852 Poppleton map. Mapping interests continue to run in the Weishampel family. David Weishampel, a grandson of John F., is a professor emeritus at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Great-grandson, John, is a professor of landscape ecology at the University of Central Florida, specializing in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).en_US
