Description from Mapping Maryland: "Though lacking formal cartographical training, Colton produced a successful series of American maps and atlases for public consumption. Most of his maps focus on individual states or regions, but his company also produced world atlases. By 1850 the company's production emphasized guidebooks and railroad maps that aided new immigrants."
