Abstract
1 map; 32 x 43 cm.; Scale: 1:506,880
Description
Description from Mapping Maryland: "Fisher (1741 - 1810) uniquely combined an unrelated design for a machine devised for cutting files with an area map outlining prospective canal roues to produce the work."
Description from "Maryland from the Willard Hackerman Map collection", George Peabody Library Exhibit Oct. 9, 2018 - March 16, 2019: "Ideas for building waterborne trade routes between the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays extend back at least to Augustine Hermann’s time as a mid-Atlantic merchant and mapmaker. Depicted here are four potential canal routes and two major roads. Initially published to accompany the American Philosophical Society’s “An abstract of sundry papers and proposals for improving the inland navigation between Pennsylvania and Maryland”. The devise show on the left hand side is known as “a machine for cutting files”. Although a charming visual addition, it has no apparent relationship to the content of the map."
