Description
Description from Mapping Maryland: " More refined in its interpretation, this map is the first in a serie of nine derived from John Smith's Virginia"
Description from "Maryland from the Willard Hackerman Map Collection", George Peabody Library Exhibit Oct. 9, 2018 - March 16, 2019: "Willem Blaeu, a member of the famous Blaeu family of map makers in Amsterdam, occasionally took short cuts with a map. An earlier Flemish map engraver, Jodocus Hondius Jr., had produced the plate for this map based on John Smith's 1618 version, testifying to its rapid popular appeal. When Hondius died, the plate was sold to Blaeu, who altered the imprint at bottom center with his own name. On the Hackerman copy the shadow of the name "Ex Officina Jodoci Hondii" is still discernabe, particularly under the "G" of "Guiljelmi".
