Description
This is the 1852 edition of Poppleton’s originally manuscript map of 1822. The following is the description of this map from Mapping Maryland: The Willard Hackerman Collection, published by the Maryland Historical Society, 1998. “ T.H. Poppleton, described in an 1811 issue of the Federal Gazette and Baltimore Daily Advertiser as a “Practical Land Surveyor and Draughtsman,” initiated a survey of the city in 1812. Not until February 1818, however, did the Maryland General Assembly commission the cartographer to print the map. Though not a financially lucrative venture at its first issues, Poppleton’s work underwent subsequent modifications and printings and served as the reference for Baltimore’s physical development until the 1880s.” Poppleton presented his manuscript version of the map to the Board of Commissioners in January 1822. Printed copies of the map first published in 1823. This edition updated to May 1852.
