Description
The Great Lakes Training Center Octet toured through Mexico, Central and South American and the United States where they appeared as guest soloists with Robert Shaw. Three Maryland/District of Columbia musicians performed with the Octet: The group's leader, Morris C. Queen (organist and choir director at Mount Zion Methodist Church before joining the Navy), Thomas B. Hawkins (a graduate from Morgan State College), and Wilmer E. Ross (a graduate of Howard University and director of the Asbury Methodist Church Choir in Washington). The group also included pianist and tenor Wilbert T. "Kokomo" Wellington (who worked with Fats Waller), James E. Holmes (a student at University of Pennsylvania), William H. Haithcock (a graduate of Morris Brown College in Atlanta), Melvin L.
