Abstract
In 1943 Anne Wiggins Brown, who created the role of Bess in Gershwin's opera, Porgy and Bess, was invited home to Baltimore to launch the Liberty Ship Frederick Douglass at the Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard. Barred that same year from performing at the Lyric Theatre, Enon Baptist Church at Edmondson Avenue and Schroeder Street, opened its doors to Brown. (Photo courtesy of Anne Brown)
